Spiti means “the middle land” — a cold desert cradled between Tibet and India at around 3,800 m, where the landscape looks like the moon and the culture has remained untouched for a thousand years. Its monasteries are among the oldest in the Buddhist world: Tabo was founded in 996 CE by the great translator Rinchen Zangpo, and Key (Kye) Monastery of the 11th century still trains lamas on its dramatic hilltop. Legends say Chandratal, the Moon Lake, was the spot from which the Pandava brother Yudhishthira ascended to heaven. With prayer flags, fossil-strewn gorges and some of the highest motorable passes on earth, Spiti is the rawest road journey in the Indian Himalaya.
